Virtual Event | Resounding Liberty: Remembering Juneteenth

June 19, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

On June 19, 1865, news that the Civil War had ended and of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued more than two years before, finally reached Galveston, Texas. While enslavement still persisted in some areas of the country, June 19 came to be known as Juneteenth, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day and is considered the oldest celebration commemorating the ending of chattel enslavement in the US.
Join us for a virtual Juneteenth celebration that includes a civic talk on the history and national impact of Juneteenth, a Hands-On History performance on the story of Harriet Tubman, a Kitchen Table Talk on the significance behind special Juneteenth dishes, and contemporary community advocates who work to amplify African American cuisine.
This event is free of charge. We would greatly appreciate a donation to the Museum in any amount. Links will be provided after registration.
